What's Big and Orange and Related to a Cucumber?

Pumpkin Patch with Keby and F.W.

Pumpkins!

You probably only think of pumpkins at Halloween when you’re carving them into jack-o-lanterns, but they’re actually pretty amazing plants worthy of year-round admiration. Here are some pumpkin facts you might not have known about.

A single vine can grow as long as 30 feet. At its peak, the vine can grow as much as 6 inches a day!

Jade Buddhas and Red Lanterns

We spent our last day in China visiting the Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai. ISmoke filled courtyard of Jade Buddha Temple haven't been there in many years, in fact not since before the original temple was destroyed in the 1900's (it was rebuilt in 1928), yet just stepping into the main courtyard was like stepping back in time for me.

Writing Chinese w/ Kiweenie Lao Shi

Kiweenie writing Chinese Title

Ni Hao class (do you remember what that means?). Kiweenie Lao Shi here again with part two of my lesson about the Chinese language. We learned how to say a few helpful phrases in our last class and I hope you've been practicing them. We've been using them a lot here in China! As you've been touring Beijing with us you've probably noticed that the spoken language is not the only part of Chinese that is very different from English.

Speaking Chinese w/ Kiweenie Lao Shi

Kiweenie Chinese Title

Lesson 1

Ni hao class! It's me Kiweenie Lao Shi (teacher Kiweenie). Since we've been in China I've been really interested in the Chinese language. I've even begun picking up a few words and phrases. Because you’re traveling through China with us I thought it would be important for you to learn a few words of Chinese too. Don’t worry, I’ll go easy on you because the Chinese language is very difficult!

MCFC Comics: Behind the Scenes

If you have read any of the Moo-Cow Fan Club Print Editions or visited our comics page then you are probably familiar with the comics I do about the MCFC gang. I thought I would share some of the process of how I create one of those comics. For an example I'll use the Toll Tale comic from the Pioneers edition.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Year of the Kiwi

Happy New Year! What, you think I'm crazy because it's way after January 1st? Well, I'm not talking about the end of the western calendar year kind of new year, I'm talking about the Chinese New Year!

You see, in the western world, we go by a different calendar than the Eastern world. We consider this year to be 2008, but in China they go by the lunar calendar on which the year is 4706.

BIG SPIDER!

Now that Fall is coming, I thought that I would share some of the pictures Ramses and I took this summer. There are a lot of good ones, but I'm only going to show a couple at a time. Just to warn you, most of them are weird creepy crawly things like this!

fishing-spider-no-egg.jpg
Keby said she thinks this is called a fishing spider, but I'm not sure if she's right, I didn't see any little spider sized fishing poles around. Ramses and I found this under an old board near the water and couldn't believe how creepy and big it was!

Make Your Own Rain Stick

H
ave you ever listened to the soft drip drop of rain on your roof? Doesn’t it sometimes sound like a song? And even though I don’t like thunder, when it’s far away, it sounds like a wild drummer. Sometimes a storm can be so musical. Now you can make your own stormy music with a rain stick!

Growing & Growing - Phoebes Pt. 3

M
y nephews & nieces are growing up before my eyes! I've been taking pictures of them as they change from little motionless fuzzballs into fully feathered flying machines. Here is one picture I took when they were two weeks old. They had already lost some of that cute baby fuzz and were peeking out of the nest more.

The Compost Post - Shade Garden pt.3

One of the main things you need when staring a new garden is good soil. Most people think dirt is just dirt, but an experienced gardener knows that good dirt is essential to a healthy garden. Good dirt is the true black gold!

Rock'n - Shade Garden pt 2

Before I start planting in my new garden I like to figure out its boundaries. I make sure my garden is going to be clearly separate from the grassy area, or plants around it, and has a shape to it that I like. There are a lot of different ways you can do this.
