Sweet Potato Head It's winter, the time of year that us gardeners usually feel sad to be separated from our gardens. But I'm never too sad because I'm never separated entirely from plants. Of course with a few feet of snow on the ground there isn't much I can do outside, but inside my nice toasty house is another story.

You too probably have a few plants inside your house right now, but did you know you don't have to limit yourself to just decorative plants? You can grow vegetables inside the house too!

One easy vegetable to grow is the sweet potato. You don’t need seeds or soil to start growing this plant. All you need to start is a sweet potato, three toothpicks, and a jar of water.

1. Put the bottom half of the potato into the water, and put the toothpicks into the potato so they rest on the lip of the jar and keep the top half out. Then put it in a sunny spot, like a windowsill, and just wait (not right next to the potato, you can go do other things).  Sweet Potato Sprout

2. You should start seeing some shoots growing out of the top of the potato within two weeks. Cut off one of the shoots, with about one inch of potato still attached to it.

3. Now get a pot or other deep container, fill it with planting soil, and plant this shoot about three to four inches deep in. It can be any container, but it needs to be about 12 inches deep so there will be plenty of room for the potato to grow.

Now it needs your help getting the right nutrition so it can grow up strong. You will need to add (organic) fertilizer to the soil about every two weeks. You'll also need to water it regularly, andSweet Potato Plant keep it in that sunny spot.

4. As the sweet potato grows the stalk will become unstable. Use a 3-foot stake to support the it as it gets taller.

When the stalk turns yellow, it's time to dig up the sweet potato (but to be sure stick your finger in the soil and feel the potato). Congratulations! You are an indoor gardener.

Cool

Keby, that is REALLY cool! I going to plant a potato as soon as I get one! Can the potato ever rot while in the soil, even if the stalk is green?

Good question!

Hi Rubylr. Any plant can rot if there is too much moisture in the soil. If you're having that kind of trouble, make sure to use sandy soil, and that the pot has a proper drain on the bottom. Sweet potatoes are also sensative to cool soil, so make sure to keep it in a spot that gets plenty of sunlight and isn't drafty.

Also, you should be able to see some evidence of rot in the stalk. It could stay green for a little bit after the potato begins to rot, but eventually, it will die as well.
