Before I start planting in my new garden I like to figure out its boundaries. I make sure my garden is going to be clearly separate from the grassy area, or plants around it, and has a shape to it that I like. There are a lot of different ways you can do this.

Some people use fences, usually wooden or wire ones. I have some vegetable gardens that have a wire fence around them because we have a deer friend (but not a dear friend) that kept helping himself to dinner!

Another way to give your garden shape and create sections is by putting in paths. The path can be wood chips, bricks or stones. I like nice wood chip paths because they make the ground soft to walk on and act as mulch.

For the little shade garden, I'm going to create the border out of stones. I have so many stones in the ground I joke that I grow them! Sometimes it takes a little work to dig them out, especially the bigger ones, but they make for nice garden decoration. If you want stones for your garden but live in a not so rocky place (lucky!) you can always buy them at a gardening store.

Kiwi in the circle of stones

Kiweenie though I built him a new track, so he just ran around and
around the circle for a long time. He said it's good for the professors
to get involved with the P.E. class every once in a while.

I spent most of today digging up rocks and laying them in a circle. I put a large rock every few feet or so to get the shape of the circle, and then I started to fill in the rest of the circle with stones as I dug them up. Sometimes I concentrate too hard on the work at hand, and I forget to notice the big picture. Does that ever happen to you? Well anyway, I was working so hard on finding rocks that I didn’t even notice that my circle outline was all crooked! It was more like a wavy oval than a circle. It took me a few tries, but I got it eventually.

Since the ground in the spot I'm doing this garden was already bare (from a brush pile we burned there), I am making my barrier before I work on the soil. If you are making a garden in the middle of a grassy lawn, you should prepare your soil before you make a barrier. We'll talk about the soil next time.

All this hard work so far, and I haven’t even planted my first plant yet! That’s okay, because preparing the garden area properly makes the rest of the growing season easier.

Check out these wildflowers that just popped up in the overgrown patch that was my very first garden. When I was just 3 my mom gave me a bunch of wildflower seeds to spread in a small area where we don’t cut the grass. Even though I haven't tended the little garden for years, beautiful
wildflowers pop up every spring and there always seem to be different ones! Wildflowers are fun to plant if you just want to liven up an area you tend leave to its own wild ways.

Mean Flowers

Those wild flowers of yours stole my lunch money yesterday! I was just walking along minding my own business when the whole gang of them jumped on me and took $5.

I'll be by later so you can give me $5 to make up for it. Maybe $10 for pain and snuffling (I'm allergic).

Not my flowers

While I do believe you could get held up by flowers, I know mine are better behaved than that.

If you come by looking for $10 you're going to have to work for it. Don't worry I have an extra shovel.
