Right now, in late spring, I’m working hard to get everything planted for the summer. I’ve decided this year to start a new garden from scratch.
We have a small patch on our farm that is a little bit shady and very neglected. I’ve decided to bring some new life to that section. Planting in the shade is a bit more difficult than planting in the sun. The majority of plants, including flowers and vegetables, need a whole lot of sun every day to grow big and strong.
Thankfully there are some hardy plants that enjoy the darker places. Ferns are one of my favorite plants that prefer a shady spot. In fact, if you plant a fern in an area that gets full sunlight it will get burned. Just like me :) (That’s why I wear a hat when I garden in the sun).
I have a lot of ferns that grow in the wild around here though, so I probably won’t be adding any to my new garden. Instead I’m planning on planting Hostas, Lily of the Valley, and Periwinkle. I’m going to take a field trip to my local nursery and pick out a few other shade loving plants. Do you have a favorite I should get? I’ll be putting pictures on here as I work in my garden so you can keep track of it as I go along. If you have any questions or suggestions just let me know!
Well, it’s time to get off the computer and get digging in the dirt!

I'll help
Just remember, I'm available for pest control. And since we Kiwis don't like the sun, a shade garden is perfect!
Very Nice
Keby that is a very fine shade garden you are going to plant, and in a few weeks I'm going to spend a lovely afternoon visiting it.
