DAY 4

wood chips
Before I add the soil to the garden, I want to create paths that help shape my actual planting areas. I’m going to make “wedges” in this garden, and each wedge will have a different theme. I’m going to separate each wedge by putting wood chips down. These wood chips will separate my garden beds and act as paths. Also they help cover the newspaper so I can put soil down only where I'll be planting (great compost is like a treasure and I don't want to waste any).

wood chips creating garden layout

There are a few awkward spots, such as the small space behind one of the tree stumps so I’m just going to fill in those little areas with the wood chips as well. These wood chip areas are important because they give you access to your garden. You don't want to walk on your actual planting beds and compact the soil. That is bad for the plants and makes your garden look messy. With paths you don't have to.

Once the wood chips are down in the non-planting areas, I fill in the beds with soil. Since your beds are sitting on newspaper, over untilled ground, make a nice deep layer of soil to give the roots a lot of room to grow and get healthy before they push down into the earth.

Look at how nice it's looking already, and there aren't even any plants in there yet!

A question

Your garden is beginning to look great!
I have a question--not about your garden, but about something that we've been having trouble with at our house. Our yard goes right up to the street, and in the winter, the snow plows pile up a bunch of snow on a long strip of the lawn, about 3 feet wide. In that snow is salt and sand. The salt and sand make driving safer, but they are killing all the grass in that long strip. Do you know of any plants that we might plant there instead of grass? Something that can do well in sandy soil, and that salt won't damage?

Hedge

Sounds to me like you need a hedge! Not just any hedge, but a salt tolerant one! You can look up salt tolerant hedges on your own, but I might suggest the Amur Privet (Ligstrum Amurense). It not only tolerant salt, but it can grow in sandy soil as well. It's low maintenance, has little green leaves, and is semi-evergreen. It can grow 12-15 inches tall.

You can protect your hedge in the winter by wrapping burlap around it. (Keep the top open so it can get air and sun.) If you think the snow buildup will be a problem you can put a wooden frame over the plants that act like a little house. (The frame holds up the snow, so the plant won't be crushed by the weight.) Good luck!
