The "lions" in your pictures are actually called Foo (fu) dogs, and are Imperial guardians. They are often found, in pairs, outside homes, palaces and temples. (Did you see a lot of them?) The two "lion-dogs" often look identical, but are actually male and female. The female stands on the left and has a cub under one paw. The male is on the right and has a globe under his paw.
Well, it's been around for a really long time now, and I think it will be around for a long time more. So, if you really want to get there you'll get your chance. Traveling is one of the greatest things in the world and if you put your mind to doing it you can always find a way to take that trip you really want. Just make sure you share your pictures of the Forbidden City with us when you get back.
