I've spent the past few entries telling you about various quirks of past presidents and, for the most part, I made being the president sound very fun. There are even perks that I didn't mention, such as private planes, various houses around the U.S., and the fact that you never have to do your own laundry. But still, being president it's not all fun and free stuff. In fact it can be one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

There is a reason that the president has his own security force called the secret service. Four presidents have been assassinated while serving and others have been shot but not killed. Most assassinations have been because someone didn't agree with the president's policies, such as with Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, but some presidents have been shot by their own supporters. The twentieth president, James A Garfield, had only been president for four months when a disgruntled supporter shot and killed him. The supporter was angry that Garfield did not give him a good government job.

Of course there have also been deaths in the white house not caused by an assassins bullet. The ninth president, William Henry Harrison delivered a two hour-long inaugural speech the day he was sworn into office. It was the longest inaugural speech in history and, while that might sound harmless, it was also in the pouring rain. Harrison refused a coat or covering for the entire speech. He caught pneumonia and died 31 days later.

The twelfth president, Zachary Taylor, died after spending a warm day out in the sun eating cherries and drinking milk, and let's just say they didn't agreed with him. He died five days later due to severe food poisoning.

And in a strange coincidence, three presidents have died on July 4th, which is the date of the founding of the United States of America and signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The second president, John Adams, and third president Tomas Jefferson both died on July 4th 1826, exactly fifty years after they signed that historic document. Then, five years later, James Monroe died on the fourth as well.

Being president might have its perks but as you see the difficulties are great, and these examples are just the extreme life or death situations. I've haven't even mentioned the politics they have to deal with while in office, some of which might seem like a fate worse than death!

I hope you've enjoyed my series on past presidents. Now if you'll excuse me, all this talk has made Ramses nervous and he's asked me to check to see if his milk and cherries were trying to assassinate him. He said they look "shifty."

President Taylor disagrees with his food.

Milk: I think he'll find that when it comes to spending a day outside in the sun, we don't agree with him at all!

Cherries: Yeah, it sure upsets us!

I just got this great campaign poster in the mail. It wasn't signed, and there was no name on the envelope, so I think it was probably made by one of the other presidential candidates that I met recently. (They can't tell anyone they're voting for me because their supporters might get mad.)

    The Ramses Flag Fan Art

I think it's one of the best posters I've ever seen! The picture of me on the flag is awesome, and really catches my good side. In fact I think I'm going to make this design my official Ramses for President Flag!

I guess there is something called a Primary going on here in NH and all
these other people running for president are showing up on my turf.
Apparently, as the only MCFC candidate, I don't have to
    worry about this primary thing.

I'm thinking that maybe we will avoid all this voting stuff, because I'm
pretty sure once all of the other presidential candidates meet me they'll just give up.

    Hello class!

I don't know what the weather is like where you live, but where I live we have a whole bunch of snow. I don't like snow because it means all the delicious buggies are gone for the winter and I'm stuck eating bugcicles, and bug preserves.

I'm just glad that it's only snowy here for three or four months. In some colder parts of the world, the ground is covered in snow for much more of the year. Have you heard the famous saying about the many Eskimo words for snow? Well, it's commonly said that Eskimos have dozens (or hundreds) of words to describe snow because they have to deal with it much more than most people. Well, that's kind of true and kind of not. I'll explain why.

First of all, having a lot of words to describe snow and ice isn't that strange. In fact English has tons! Some of them are: blizzard, flurry, sleet, hail, white out, snowdrift, frost, powder, slush and of course just plain old snow. In my dictionary at home there are more than 50 words that start with snow and I think I could find more if I looked in that really thick dictionary Rhetorical has!

We also have to consider the variety of Eskimo and Inuit languages. The word Eskimo describes the native people who live in the frozen regions of the world such as the Arctic and Siberia. The natives of Alaska and Greenland are called Inuits. Not all Eskimos and Inuits are from the same background or group, and while their languages are similar, they are distinct.

Eskimo and Inuit languages are also unique in the way they work. They are what are known as "polysynthetic" languages. Instead of using a fixed set of words, like we do in English, people who use polysynthetic languages can put multiple words together to create a new word. This means that there can be a very large variety of words not just for snow, but for anything.

So, do Eskimos have hundreds of words to describe snow? Well, that kind of depends on how you look at it. Sure they do, but so does English and many other languages. I guess this just means that people need a lot of words for snow wherever they live and not just in places where you can't get an unfrozen bug for most of the year.

Whoops, I just saw F.W. throw a snowball at Ramses outside so I better dismiss class so we don't miss all the fun.

Kiweenie & Eskimo in the deep snow.

    soft deep snow muruaneq

Here are some snow words in the in one Inuit language, Central Alaskan Yupik. 13,000 people in the coast and river areas of Southwestern Alaska speak this language.

    qanuk - snowflake
    qanir - to snow
    kanevvluk - fine snow/rain particles
    natquik - drifting snow
    qanikcaq - snow on ground
    muruaneq - soft deep snow
    pirta - blizzard, snowstorm
