hose of you who have visited the MCFC Music Hall might already know the name of Christopher Staknys (the official MCFC composer). Well, Ryan and I finally had the pleasure of meeting Christopher, along with his mom Audrey, in person! Within minutes of meeting them, we watched Christopher give a perfect performance of two very difficult pieces on the piano and then we got to hear a string orchestra perform a piece he had written. It was amazing!

So how is an 11-year-old able to compose so many great pieces of music and play them so well? Well, he might be young in age, but he has an impressive resume. Here is part of the brief overview he gave us of his life in music so far.

A "Photo" with Christopher & Audrey
This is a "photo" we asked someone to take of us when we met Christopher and his mom Audrey. Click on it to see what happened. (L-R: Audrey, Becky, Christopher, Ryan)

"I learned to play violin at age 4. Began to write music at age 6. Sang solo part in Lithuanian song at Boy Singers of Maine Holiday Concert age 8. Played flute in school band - (helped to appreciate flucorder!) – also played recorder. Wrote a symphony when I was 9. Won Laureate Prizes (2nd and 3rd place for solo performance and piano concerto) at International Piano Competition, "Music Without Limits" in Lithuania Aug 2007, 10 years old."

Christopher was a little reluctant to list all that he’s done because he didn’t want to sound self-centered or braggy (which he in no way is). But we don’t think it’s bragging, it’s being proud of your accomplishments.

Christopher doesn't just hide away at home and play music all the time though. He says his favorite activity after music is reading (his favorite author is Homer who wrote the Odyssey and the Iliad) and he plays sports (tennis, baseball and skiing are his favorite).

Christopher also loves animals. In fact his pets have even been inspiration for his music. He's dedicated a symphony to his cat Tiger, and he had a pet rat Bartleby that "wrote" his own music. (Christopher said Bartleby just ran up and down the keyboard, but it was very musical.) He now has a chinchilla named Nutmeg who helps inspire Christopher, and is a big Moo-Cow fan too! (Nutmeg is obviously very intelligent.)

Christopher also likes to help music lovers young and old. He plays for resident at a nursing home, and volunteers at the local YMCA preschool program.

It was really great that we could get together with Christopher and Audrey. As a special treat for other MCFC fans he let us videotape him playing some of the Moo-Cow songs he's written! (You can see video of two of his performances below.) We are planning on releasing a CD of Christopher’s music as well as book of piano sheet music, so keep your eyes out for both of those in the future!

Sweet Potato Head It's winter, the time of year that us gardeners usually feel sad to be separated from our gardens. But I'm never too sad because I'm never separated entirely from plants. Of course with a few feet of snow on the ground there isn't much I can do outside, but inside my nice toasty house is another story.

You too probably have a few plants inside your house right now, but did you know you don't have to limit yourself to just decorative plants? You can grow vegetables inside the house too!

One easy vegetable to grow is the sweet potato. You don’t need seeds or soil to start growing this plant. All you need to start is a sweet potato, three toothpicks, and a jar of water.

    1. Put the bottom half of the potato into the water, and put the toothpicks into the potato so they rest on the lip of the jar and keep the top half out. Then put it in a sunny spot, like a windowsill, and just wait (not right next to the potato, you can go do other things).  Sweet Potato Sprout

    2. You should start seeing some shoots growing out of the top of the potato within two weeks. Cut off one of the shoots, with about one inch of potato still attached to it.

    Planting a sweet potato

    3. Now get a pot or other deep container, fill it with planting soil, and plant this shoot about three to four inches deep in. It can be any container, but it needs to be about 12 inches deep so there will be plenty of room for the potato to grow.

Now it needs your help getting the right nutrition so it can grow up strong. You will need to add (organic) fertilizer to the soil about every two weeks. You'll also need to water it regularly, andSweet Potato Plant keep it in that sunny spot.

    4. As the sweet potato grows the stalk will become unstable. Use a 3-foot stake to support the it as it gets taller.

When the stalk turns yellow, it's time to dig up the sweet potato (but to be sure stick your finger in the soil and feel the potato). Congratulations! You are an indoor gardener.

    Year of the Kiwi

Happy New Year! What, you think I'm crazy because it's way after January 1st? Well, I'm not talking about the end of the western calendar year kind of new year, I'm talking about the Chinese New Year!

You see, in the western world, we go by a different calendar than the Eastern world. We consider this year to be 2008, but in China they go by the lunar calendar on which the year is 4706.

Chinese New Year FirecrackersInstead of a fixed date for the first day of the new year (Like January 1st) the Lunar New Year changes every year. It starts on the day of the first new moon of the year, and ends 15 days later when the moon is full. This means that by our calendar Chinese New Year can fall anytime between late January to late February.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are giant family oriented holidays in China. People travel all across the country to be with their family and to enjoy big meals together, but it's not just immediate family that is thought about. It's very important that ancestors are remembered and honored during the new year celebration as well.

There are lots of traditions surrounding the new year, including cleaning the house from top to bottom, and paying off any debts. Another tradition is giving red envelopes filled with money to kids. In China, the color red symbolized happiness, and it is believed that giving money will bring luck in the upcoming year.

Of course the new year is also celebrated with fireworks and firecrackers. Firecrackers are little packages of gunpowder rolled up in pieces of red paper (for good luck) that are strung together in long rows. That way you only have to light one end, and all the firecrackers explode down the row. They can be strung together in the hundreds and they make really loud noises (which some say scares away any bad spirits).

    Year of the Rat

The Chinese New Year also corresponds with the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. A new animal is represented every year and people born during this time are supposed to take on the characteristics of the animal. This year the animal is the rat. You might think that rats are scary or gross, but being born in the year of the rat symbolizes wit, imagination, curiosity and a lot of energy. Hmm, that sounds more like the year of the kiwi bird to me.

Class dismissed! Happy Chinese New Year to you all!
